Learn a New Industry Topic: The Beginner's Guide

This post, show some steps that you can use to learn about an industry topic. This is an expanded version of a post I found online from a person I follow. The main reason why I'm writing is that I found the method mentioned is straightforward and doesn't need much experience to execute (You might acquire the domain knowledge by doing this often). I'm basically expanding on the scribble short post.

I will mention the original person's Linkedin below (I couldn't find the post to share).

Steps

  • Google Search

Start with a simple Google search, click all the ads, and top-ranking search results. You can use tools like Google Trends, Ahrefs, our SERP Toolkit (Google Sheet addon with advanced functionalities)

Also, setting up a google alert for the topics is a good way to keep track of the latest news.

  • Check the review websites

The next step is basically trying to find much information about the competitors, websites, and their user reviews if possible by going to G2, Capterra, TrustRadius.

You can list down those details on a Notion page or a Google Sheet. (I used SimpleScraper Chrome Extension)

Finally, read entire websites and extract information as much as you can to get a better idea about the topic. Moreover check their demo videos, Youtube, reports, presentations, whitepapers..etc to get more about the content.

Look similar taste people on LinkedIn and Twitter to get the relevant content on your feed is also another way.

Conclusion

Special thanks to Arjun R Pillai's short notes on the topic. As a reader, you don't need to spend hours searching on Google for these specific steps.

Now, you've everything you need to get started on researching the topic.
